Everyone made such nice drawings. Too bad I didn't notice this thread earlier but I don't have a scanner so I couldn't have contributed with anything. Also, I don't have any doodles available right now.
lol the quality of the pictures in this thread seems to be going up with each new reply (Not that the first ones are bad, just looks like more effort in the most recent pictures).

... May I...? First of all, I'd like to say "Hello!" and "Welcome" to our newest member and a wonderful artist, Panda (or is that IPanda?... or would you like to be referred to by another name?) The last entry in this thread was wonderful! It's been ages since I took out a tablet and do something... well, recreational... And no one resents that fact more than I do. However, in a moment of intense procrastination a few days ago, I scanned in an old (old, old) sketch of mine and decided to do something about it. So... here's the result, "Fiançailles" ...Just in case you're wondering, both "Fiançailles" and the first painting ("Tsukiyo no higeki") depict the same person. There's a reason why they look and dress similarly...

... May I...? Thank you, Panda! I was never good with the markers and was only a little better with the pencil crayons... I can't even say I have tablet aptitude (I learned most of what I do on the fly...) It's very nice to hear someone liking your stuff... thank you very much for your kinds words and your support! Well... To answer your question: No... I won't be in the artist alley this year. The university keeps me far too busy to come up with the time and resources to turn these doodles into market-worthy art. Besides... Old Vel's not into the best-selling series that people would spend money on buying fanarts from. And when it comes to artists' alley, fan art sells... and the more popular the series, the better they sell. ~Sigh... Ol' Vel would try very very hard to come up with these pieces for the forum. Very hard...

I should get something sketches going too... Veleta, I like your character designs, the feathers and hat I guess reflect the time period? or is that just personal style? Also how come she's not smiling? Also is the light source coming from the top right hand corner? Bryan, First thoughts that come to mind, ROMANCE! hahaha but its wierd the guy doesn't seem to be enjoying her company. To me his body language is saying 'hmm..what should i have for lunch.....' instead of 'wow..blue hair.....i wonder if she dyed it...' lol you know what i mean, if i had to change it i'd probably draw his hand around touching her back But otherwise your pic creates good atomsphere!

Something I've been working on, COLD AGE: THE SMACKDOWN hmm...the problem here is that i'm trying to use cross hatching method in my paintings to make it look real, on paper it looks good however translating it digitally, looks cheese and fake. The concept behind this is a person discovering a ancient city located in the artic.

... May I...? To answer Barry's number of questions: 1. Yes... the light comes from the top right hand corner. The light of the backgroud is not from the same corner, however. This contrast gives the whole picture a "cameo" effect. 2. Character design... ~sigh I have a confession to make : these two paintings ("tsukiyo no higeki" and "Fiancailles") are both based on the same person, a very real person. For "Tsukiyo no higeki": For "Fiancailles": This explains the dress (which is not "period"), and the mass of feathers . These feathers are not easy to paint, at all... if this person does not love them such, I'd love to leave the feathers out. ... and the reason why the painted character doesn't smile? The original didn't... Now... for your own work: Cross-hatching is a great technique that helps to give depth and texture in a painting. The reason why this is not used so much in digital paintings is that digitally, there are other ways to convey the necessary depth and texture. That's one reason why, when it's black and white, cross-hatching looks great, but turn "fake" digitally (especially when other textures are insinuated through the use of shades and colours). To change the effect... if you desire changing it, I suggest reducing the intensity of the cross-hatches, and use different shades of colour to create the desired effect. There are other "texturing" devices in every graphic-manipulating software. These can help you to create the effect you wish. The other thing that I might suggest here is to increase the resolution of your paintings by reducing their sizes. I know this suggestion sounds like an oxy-moron, but there's a reason for it. Right now, everything in your painting is rather large, and the focus is very soft. Since the details are large and blurry, unless the paiting is looked upon from a distance, the whole picture looks blurry, sketchy and generally undone. To create a sharper focus means to literally "look at the painting from a disntace", which means reducing the size. This might also help your cross-hatching woes.

hey barry, thnx for the comment... but u must have realized that the pair is actually cain and lillian... so if anythin cain is a very troubled guy that doesn't know how to deal with emotions and show them properly... lillian on the other hand had always been the openly emotional kind... in a good way that is... so w/ that said... i think u can tell wat is goin on w/ the picture here....
anyway, on to ur pic... i think the reason that ur cross hatchin doesn't work here is due to a few factors... one is that on paper the brush doesn't end w/ a round tip so it gives a randome feel that's not bein conveyed by the round tips in photoshop... also your brush sizes r a bit big... which gives the texture a very unreal feel... so my suggestion is to use smaller brushes, and layer on more layers of strokes, this will give more of a texture look instead of showing individual brush strokes which looks really fake...wat u've done around the guy is a very good start... anyway, if u r gonna print this picture, my suggestion is to not mess with the resolution at all... i think u know this but i'll say it anyways... how things work on the monitor is very different than how things work on a printer... when u want to increase the resolution of the picture when printed, the number u put in for the dpi should go up, however this doesn't increase the picture on paper... just how many dots to print on the paper, thus increased resolution... on screen, however, things r opposite, because the resolution of the monitor is set at 72 dpi, the resolution will never change doesn't matter what u input into the picture size... the way the computer interpret the higher resolutions is to increase the size of the picture that appears on screen... so the larger the resolution the larger the picture on screen, and vice versa... the reason that pictures look better when u shrink them down on the screen is b/c that by decreasing the resolution u r actually removing a lot of the rough details, and those include unwanted ones like white spaces... thus the picture looks smoother, givin the illution that the resolution had been increased... while this works well on screen, on printers, however, it actually means lowered resolution and will look crappy... so if u r gonna print the picture then don't decrease the picture's resolution... if u r gonna keep it as just a computer file, then shrink down the size of the picture after you've done w/ everythin...

okay, an update on the lillian-cain pic... the colourin is a bit different from the one above... and i've put more red into lillian's skin, since i've got a comment b4 that her skin's a bit pale... so tell me wat y'all think... r the changes good? or do i need to change back?

... May I...?
Strange as it may sound, I think the reddish tone works much better with the blue hair (... contrary to popular belief...).
I think the changes make Lillian a more realisitic, earthy individual (which would provide a better contrast than "head-in-the-clouds" Cain). If Cain's tainted by a vampire blood, it might be conceivable that he has paler skin (a common trait). The last skin colour for Lillian would make the skin colour difference less obvious. That'd be rather bad, don't you think?
Overall... I like the change. Keep working on it!

... May I...? I assume, the general populace of CP must be rather tired of seeing the same person again and again from me. In light of that, I would like to present a different subject. This one is called Mirroir: I apologise for the use of an old sketch for this picture. Old Vel is turning senescent lately... feels too old and tired and withdrawn to do new things...

Greetings:
Very nice work for both HM and Velata!
HM: I really like the flesh tones on Lillian this time.
Velata: I was there for the character design so I know what its all about. I must say though... nice colouring work!
Keep up the good work.
For the Riptide Project, Advent Childhe,

The shattered mirror reminded me of a doodle I did a few weeks ago whilst listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall album: I really need to do some more doodling this summer. I love how relaxing it is to just sit back and let your hand wander as it will while your concentration is really elsewhere, on music or memories or day dreams. So cathartic...
