Editor-in-Chief
NAME: Alexander Pazionis
Program&Year: Mechanical Engineering, 1T1
Reason for Interest: Why am I interested in it or why would I be good at it? Two different things. So let's start with the former, shall we? Writing has been one of my major past-times since I wrote a painfully cliche fantasy novel for a project in Grade 9. 100 pages of derivative characters and predictable plot lines, hurray! Since then I've gotten better at it, of course. My works since then are many, and more often than not include a fairly significant element of the off-the-wall and absurd, juxtaposed by a fairly down-to-earth/familiar foreground or background. For example, in Grade 11 I wrote a one-act play based on a schizophrenic video game addict who, while waiting in line for the new "Gamestation X-2000" hallucinates violently and eventually is forced to come face-to-face with his addiction, embodied in the form of a villainous being from his favorite game.
As time passed, I developed a taste also for the more administrative side of the arts. For example, in Grade 12 I directed a one-act play written by one of my classmates to be performed in front of a full-house of audience members. The play followed the drunken escapade of a struggling, aspiring film critic the night before his first big film review was due. Not knowing where to start, good ol' Mr. Ethanol provides him with a little help from imaginary figments in the forms of none other than two of the greatest film stars of all-time: Humphrey Bogart and Clint Eastwood. As a side note, a friend of mine filmed the play and I have it on DVD...although the sound quality of the camera he used is fairly questionable. The point of this is, of course, that my love of art includes both what goes on behind the scenes and in front of them. Being Editor-in-Chief for Crumpled Paper Magazine is a fantastic way for me to satisfy this interest.
So why would I be good at it? Well, I never procrastinate, I'm an anal-retentive perfectionist, and I'm just all-round...awesome? Ya, that sums it up. Awesome. I could think of a bunch more adjectives between "anal-retentive" and "awesome" but it occurs to me this rant about myself is already ridiculously long as is.
What is your plan to make Crumpled Paper better : First off, I'd like to get more issues printed every year. Once a month might be pushing it a little, but I think it's fully possible to get 2 issues published per semester. We'd just need more art submissions and money. The submissions I think we can handle pretty readily. We just need to get the word out a LOT more. We need to hit fliers on engineering buildings, artsci buildings, med sci buildings, you name it. And be assured, I have the means to acquire many, many fliers...many.
So then that leaves the money. Given how rough the area around U of T seemed to have been with respect to sponsors when me and Peter went to try and dig some up, that probably wouldn't be our best source. So what is? Fundraisers, huzzah! I know we've had fundraisers this year, but we could do with a few more. I notice there are really zero good quality pizza places in walking distance near U of T. At least not that I know of. So I say we do what always went on at my high-school: buy copious quantities of good pizza, and sell each slice at an absurd mark-up. That was essentially a weekly occurrence at my highschool for 4 years. It doesn't even seem like a huge undertaking. It doesn't take a massive amount of people to sign for/sell slices of pizza. It seems to me that, at any given time, one single person can handle it. And we can organize it so that when one person has class, another person, having just emerged from class, takes their place for an hour, and then the process repeats.
Plus, if we start releasing more issues, I'm pretty sure we could get more funding from U of T as well.

Editor-in-ChiefName: Ray Chen Year & Program: 3rd year computer engineering I joined CP, simply because I loving drawing. Now, I have been the internal director of CP for a year. I believe that I have a well understanding of all the club functions. I want to see CP grows bigger and stronger. This is why I’m running for the chair. Why? I was the promotion director of the National Business and Technology Conference 2009. The position had improved and proven my skills of leading a team and organizing big professional events. Last summer, I was volunteering in an orphanage in Tanzania. Organizing daily activities, setting up files for the orphans and administration uses, building a website for them to look for sponsorship overseas did not just increase my leadership skills, but also dramatically enhanced my experience to build a global vision. And I believe the big vision is an essential part of leadership nowadays. Therefore, I think my experience would definitely help me run this chair position well. What? Loving drawing, creative writing is the link connecting all of us together. However, I think, basing on that, we need more to make a good magazine. CP should not be limited to just being a stage displaying people’s art work. It could be much bigger. It could be a place where people can share thoughts and skills; it could be a book which people can learn from; it could be a magazine that inspires people. How? How to improve CP? It all comes down to how to improve the magazine first. The content needs to be more categorized. The cover needs to be more professional. In terms of distribution, which has been a problem for us in the past, I’d like to create an online version of CP. We still keep printing the magazine, at the same time, we send them via email! And I believe it would be a great method of promoting us. More sponsorship should be found. And these are just some of my basic ideas. With all these vision and thoughts that I have for CP, I hope I can have the chance to bring exciting changes to CP and to bring Crumpled Paper into its next curve. Name: Erin Tsang Program: Eng Sci Year: Second year (as of September 2009)
Interested Position 1: Writing Editor Reason of Interest: Throughout middle school and high school, I have always enjoyed writing, and, although I chose to pursue sciences and maths in university, I was an active member of my high school writer's club and writing community. I regularly submitted and published works in my school's literary magazine, took a writer's craft course in my final year, and, through my writer's craft course and the writer's club, acted as an unofficial editor for most of the publications in my high school. One thing that I missed the most this year was not only writing myself but being able to read, critique and help edit the works of others who enjoy writing.
Interested Position 2: Assistant Editor Reason of Interest: Having read Issue IX of CP during Frosh week after the clubs fair, I instantly knew that I wanted to be part of the group that put together this magazine. As I have had prior experience in administrative work as a student leader, such as being the student coordinator of a province-wide high school conference in my final year, I feel I have the skills desired for the position of Assistant Editor and can help the Editor-in-Chief keep everything running smoothly and on time.

Name: Ying Meng Program: Engineering Science - Biomedical Year: will be 4th year
Interested Position: Layout Editor
Reason of Interest: - enjoyed planning spreads for CP and creating an outlet for the large amount of creativity from fellow classmates - enjoyed working with Jessica and fellow CP members and the social events
Plan: - will encourage/enlist classmates & acquaintances to contribute to CP; during the summer, I've picked up sketching and watercolors and hope to contribute to CP myself - create art/writing contests (with prizes?) to promote interest & readership (ex: write the most captivating first page of a novel genre) - perhaps establish a recurring section, such as opinions, book/music review etc.

Name: Carola Rong Program & Year: Going into 2nd year Neuroscience Specialist with Psychology and Math minor
Interested Positions: Writing Editor and Layout Editor
Reason of Interest and plans: As a writing editor I believe I come from a solid background enriched with writing experiences. These include working with my high school newspaper and magazine as a writer and editor, as well as being the president and founder of the Literature Club at my school. I have a strong passion for reading which led me to pursue an equally strong interest in writing. Although I am in science, I believe that it allows me to give myself more freedom to choose when to indulge in my interests, and it keeps my mind unfettered by needless essays I would have to commit to if I were in an English program. As layout editor, I would like to have a strong impact on the layout and design of the magazine. I would like to see more unity and a more dominant theme in each issue, which I believe will appeal even more to readers. I have worked as the Assistant Editor of the yearbook in my final year at high school and have immersed myself in the techniques of Adobe Photoshop, of which I still see as a third arm and hand to me. Being on the team I will strive to co-operate with peers and do my best with the publication and above all to serve the student body.

Name: Miranda Simpson Program & Year: Philosophy and East Asian Studies, English minor 3rd year Interested Positions: 1) Writing Editor, 2) Layout EditorReasons of Interest and Plans:1. Writing Editor. As an English minor, and avid blogger, and a love of all prose, I would greatly enjoy being the writing editor. I am very proficient at editing and appreciate all forms of poetry. I would enjoy reviewing the submissions and editing them. I am able to work well in groups and thus would be able to work quite efficiently and beneficially with the editor and layout editor. As a philosophy major, I am able to categorize things and determine which are of greater importance--which would help me prioritize which submissions are of greater value to be in the magazine than others. Also, I am very artistic and good with Word and Photoshop, so I would be able to make very artistically pleasing brochures, fliers, and so forth. I plan to make really attention grabbing brochures and so forth. I also hope to pick a diversity of pieces so that there is an eclectic mix of things to please a variety of readers . 2. Layout EditorAs previously noted, I work well with others. I've been using Adobe products since grade 10 and would be able to run tutorials on how to use Photoshop and so forth. My career goal is to be a teacher, so I would really enjoy instructing others on how to master PS =3D). I am good at reviewing things and having taken all the art courses available at my high school, I am able to critique art and make aesthetically pleasing layouts =3DD. I have a great printer for printing images and would most definitely get everything printed on time! ^^

Name:Aaron Shindman Program & Year of Study:Engineering Science - Manufacturing 0T9+PEY Interested Position:Writing Editor
Hi, My name is Aaron and I am running for the position of writing editor. I have just completed my PEY placement and will be heading into fourth year engineering science next year.
I have been involved in publications since the beginning of my first year, after signing up for them at the orientation clubs fair. I have since worked hard writing, editing and reviewing the Toike Oike and the Cannon. On the writing side, I will be serving as the head writer of the Toike Oike next year, while on the editing side I hope to serve as the writing editor of crumpled paper.
I have worked on many, long design reports, going through every word to make them understandable and presentable, so I am no stranger to long reviewing and correcting sessions. From reading this, you will see that I can organize writing for clarity, with correct spelling and grammar.
It is my hope that you will give me the chance in the coming year to hold the writing in Crumpled Paper up to the high publication standards expected of it.
Thank you for reading what I have to say and I look forward to being able to work with the other executives to deliver a high-quality, creative magazine to the student body next year.

Name: Jina Yu Program & Year of Study: Human Bio (5th year Sept-Dec 2009) Interested Position: Internal Director Reason for Interest: Hi all! I've been with CP for 3 years now. I'm quite familiar with all the traditional CP events that have been taking place each year ie. Valentine's Day Rose Sale being a big one! (I have the pics to prove it was a blast this Spring : ) I'd love the CP events to continue strong this new term! I believe that a bonded CP group (along with good submissions) produce the best quality issues! Team work is considerably built on trust and friendship which group events provide : ) That's where I'd like to play a part. What is your plan to make Crumpled Paper better: If we have more events planned (including fundraisers) for the new term, I'll make sure the location is booked in advance, have the list of items ready, so that the event flows smoothly on the day of. When it comes to detailed planning I'm meticulous, and when it comes to execution, you have my word. (And I'll let you know in advance if something comes up).
