Place is really, bloody dead, so I thought I make a new interesting thread Anyways, I drew cover number two, before I came up with the 'Time Square' idea I drew some other thumbnails to show what i wanted in the city. so here's two thumbnails, modeled after New York Seriously I should get paid..........I'm a starving artist... Suzy if ur reading this, what do u think of my buildings? ^___^

pretty depressing, looks like the city is dead like there's not night life!

I like the one with the bridge... more then the other ones. Probably because I'm never fond of big buildings.

Hey Barry
That's an awesome painting, that looks like some crazy city, wish toronto looked that busy
i think it would be great if you could use a different perspective, then a simple straight on look like an angled bird's eye view, or a side view that's looking diagonally at the city
i think it would make things more interesting and emersive
awesome stuff man

... May I...? Barry's right.. this part of the forum has been silent for a long while. I can't say which paintings I would have liked better for the cover of issue 2. These two paintings are great on their own (love the one with the bridge It reminds me of something I shouldn't remember... but - of course - I do ) However, they might not have worked so well as magazine covers. If anything... they'll clash with Cindy's comic strip On another note: I noticed that Barry tends to paint in large, broad strokes. It makes for an amazing effect, to be sure. But I have a feeling they'd look better at 10 paces than at eye level. The strokes themselves show up against the background of other strokes and make the whole painting messy. Is that what Barry's after? Shading on some of the buildings in the first painting also seem uneven, especially in the foreground. When the background looked "cleaner" than the foreground, I think it might be distracting; not to mention it gives off the feeling that Barry didn't pay attention to his buildings (which is absolutely wrong, right? )

Barry has a great style, it is unique and gives an incredible effect, and, i must say, it takes a lot of confidence to paint in such strokes... I usually am too scared to mess up the image to paint like this, i'm one of those that likes to restrict myself w/ outlines.
W/ that said, i do think velata is right about the foreground looking messier than the background, and i feel that the background is much more vibrant than the foreground, which takes away from the center of attention which is the bridge and the buildings in the forground. looking at the pictures, it gives a feeling that they r unfinished... maybe a few more detains, and cleaner lines around the forground buildings will make these great pieces of art.

Ok …ok …so no jks for now…i’ll do a critique of da art (since I’m supposed to be seriously into buildings eh!-->architecture): Umm….ok where to start..1st picture-- Let’s start with the positives…then work our way to the negatives..heh Where the moon is with all dat moonlit glow on the clouds is really good…then… Background buildings are ok…but the foreground is not detailed enough..the focus should be more on the focal point and less on the background..which I’m assuming is the bridge…it could look less like a leaning spider web ;D and more like a structurally sound bridge..that could actually hold cars! Hehe Overall you should wrap the back, middle, front together with more details (in da front/bridge) and play with the lights and shadows more..especially with the bridge…and the surrounding..(polluted?)water…*ahem..is there water??
2nd pic…basically same…switch the detailing around…back to front….lights and shadows Try for a different perspective as shen said….

Dark... is....good....
Most of my recent paintings are dark too... especially since I came into university, before that my stuff was always brightly lit with happy people. Influence of school ^_^?
Anyway, it looks really nice, it's probably sketchy cause it's still in the sketch stages. But from an "engineering perspective", shouldn't cables on suspension bridges be straight?
Barry's got the next Tacoma Narrows ;D
