... May I...? Old Vel's a repository of useless supersitions. Here's a good quick one if anyone's looking for a special someone for the summer: When you see the first new moon after mid-summer, go to a lonely stile, turn your back to it, and ask that your lover may appear. His form will come along the path and pass you by, but on no account must you speak or venture to touch him, and if you look back over the stile to see who is coming a misfortune will befall. I know "lonley stiles" are a little difficult to find nowdays, but if you are really, really interested..... Well... ...

Superstitions that we believe or superstitions that we just know but don't actually abide by? Booo…..woke up early to do income tax….the numbers seem so very wrong somehow….bah…fix it later :)I meant any superstitions that you believe in or any that you know of, that you find interesting enough to post…. Here’s another I sorta believe…..”break a mirror, get 10 years bad luck” I think it’s unlucky to break a mirror…but I think 10 years of it…is kinda extreme eh? *stiles....

Isn't it 7 years bad luck for breaking a mirror?

... May I...?
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall..."... The mirror is the source of a lot of supersitions, and not only bad ones.
If you break a mirror, it is said that you'll have 7 years of bad luck. Why 7, you ask? Apparently, 7 is one of the mystical numbers in the (super)natural world, and everything runs a full cycle in a span of 7's (e.g. 7 days, 7 months, 7 years). Since mirrors are said to capture the soul of the person who looks into the mirror, the fragemented soul would take a full cycle of 7 years to heal. In the mean time, you'll have bad luck.
Other supersition towards mirrors are also rather ominous: 1. If a mirror breaks on its own accord, someone close to the witness will die soon. 2. If a child is reflected in the mirror before 12 months of age, the child will die young. 3. If your image is reflected in the mirror along with a deceased person, you will follow the person to the grave soon. ... just to name a few...
But, mirrors aren't all bad. "Catoptromancy" (scrying) is the ancient art where mirrors are used to tell the future. Here are a few that might pique the general interest: 1.If a girl eats an apple in front of a mirror with her eyes closed, then open her eyes over her shoulder, whe will see her future husband. 2. At midnight on New Year's eve, if a girl dips a mirror in a spring, she will see the image on her future husband in the mirror. 3. If a couple first saw each other in a mirror, they will be forever happy.
... the two sides of the mirror...

Greetings:
B. F. Skinner says that all superstitions come from irrational coupling between a unconditioned stimulus to a conditioned response.
I have many superstitoins. I have a jar full of pennies that I find. Not enough to buy me dinner... just a peace of mind. To help me win the sweepstakes and retire comfortably.

I've been told that if you see sparrows bathing in dirt, it's the sign of a storm coming in. I used to have a dirt driveway (an absolute bitch to shovel during the winter) and I saw this phenomenon through many summers. The little birds would seem like they're in water -only it's dirt. Shortly thereafter (either overnight, or the same day) it would rain hard. I just realized that this has little or nothing to do with luck but predicting the weather. In terms of superstitions, my mom insists that I never cut my hair on Tuesday or Saturday (it offends certain gods) and apparently I'm not allowed to wear green shoes. I had a pair that I wore twice -and I had a car accident on the one day, while my bike got crushed on the other day that I wore them. Both these incidents happened on a Wednesday. The funny thing is that my mom and grandmother tried to "reason with me" and explain to me that for me to wear green shoes is really bad luck -especially on a Wednesday, and that I should give away the shoes. Which I ended up doing.

... May I...? A lot of the folkoric "old wive's tales" has some truth behind them. Therefore, even if they are sometimes considered as supersition, the label is not entirely accurate. For example, if swallows (or any other smaller birds) fly low to the ground, it is a sign of rainy weather. This has something to do with the internal barometer built within the animals, as well as the behaviour of their prey (bugs fly low to the ground before the rain, too). But... that's what the Farmers' Almanac is for. It's actually rather useful at times, too. As far as green shoes are concerned, my guest would probably be interested in knowing that many cultures share a distaste for the colour green. An Irish woman quit her job as a clerk when she knew that she would be forced to wear a green uniform (true story.... ). This stems from the old superstition that the colour green is the colour of the fair folks. By wearing their colours, one incurs their wrath, and they would wreak havoc on one's life. ... it certainly looks like green doesn't do too much for our guest, either....

I don't want to start a new thread about this and I'd really much rather change the topic (or get back on topic) of an already existing thread.
I have a cut at the edge of my lip (right where my upper and lower lips meet). When I open my mouth wide enough, yawning for example, the cut reopens and bleeds. I can't keep the wound open all the time and I have to open my mouth to eat so it won't stay closed either. I don't know what to do. It's annoying the hell out of me.

Sounds like a nasty cut. Sorry to hear that.
When dealing with cuts at unsightly places, , try liquid bandages. They are sold in drugstores at the first-aid areas, and come in a little bottle like nail polishes. They help to cover the wound up just like a bandage, wherever that wound may be. (However, please make sure that these things can be use around the mouth area, without the possibility of ingestion. That would be something very important to know... and I can't remember on the top of my head).
Things will also take a longer time toi heal if the wound is constantly re-opend. Therefore, you might want to try some kind of ointment at the area. A possibility is viscous tea-tree oil extract. This "almost-alternative" medicine is said to help little cuts and abrasions to heal a lot faster, and it is a proven antispetic. That could also be found in the local drug store.
Good luck.
